Second phase of the design. In 1885-6 city directory John Hazlett, boilermaker, is listed at 496 Brock Street. This may be an error, as Wm. Hazlett, also a boilermaker, is listed at 476 Brock Street, the residence adjoining Hazlett Cottage, and subsequent directories show that they lived together. John and William Hazlett probably lived at 476 Brock Street until 1890, when John moved to 147 Frontenac Street. He bought the site for Hazlett Cottage, corner lots 790 and 791, in 1884 and 1892 respectively, but the directory of 1893-94 lists the lot as 'vacant'. In the 1894 directory, John was in residence at his new house, therefore Hazlett cottage dates almost certainly to 1893. Subsequently George M. Hazlett inherited 476 Brock and 361 Frontenac in 1914 (32-28981), Howard D. Hazlett and wife Violet obtained it in 1939 (54-52979). Violet sold 361 to Wm. McCready in 1973 (239071), McCready to Krieger in 1974 (254438), to Broyden in 1978 (309449). John Hazlett was a Presbyterian (JDS) possibly part of the community that Newlands drew upon for commissions.
