General note
Thomson (1799-1841) was the son of a London merchant. In 1826 he entered Parliament as a Whig, becoming Vice-President of the Board of Trade in 1830 and President in 1834. In 1839 he was appointed Governor-General of the newly-united provinces of Canada. He was the 1st Lord Sydenham. It was his decision to move the capital from Montreal to Kingston in Feb.1841. He died in a riding accident of Sept.4,1841.
