Notice biographique
Dr. Thomas Robinson Dupuis was a school teacher and medical doctor in Kingston. He was also an Alderman in the City of Kingston as well as a professor at Queen's University in Anatomy and Botany. His first wife, Elizabeth Emery Lake (b.1841-d.1886) whom he married on the 23rd of April, 1861, was the daughter of prosperous farmer Dennis Lake. Thomas and Elizabeth had five children; two daughters who died in infancy, and three sons.
After the death of Elizabeth, Thomas remarried Anne Jane Crawford (b.1857-d.1924), also a school teacher. They had a daughter Ethel Maude (1889-1950). After the death of Thomas Robinson Dupuis, Anne Jane became mentally ill and was institutionalized.
Historique de la conservation
This sous-fonds forms part of the Kirkpatrick-Nickle legal collection. The documents came from the law firm of Nickle and Nickle, which was founded by Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1828, and which continued under various names (Kirkpatrick Nickle) and with various partners until 1968. The Dupuis estate papers were deposited, along with the papers of other clients of the firm, in Queen's University Archives during the 1960's.
Portée et contenu
The sous-fonds is comprised of estate papers for both Thomas and Elizabeth Dupuis of Kingston and cover the period of 1886 to 1906. There is a small amount of material pertaining to Charles Bunker Dupuis, the son of Elizabeth and Thomas, who was killed in a train accident while attending the University of Toronto as a law student. The sous-fonds predominantly consists of correspondence, legal documents, financial records and documents relating to various pieces of property. Of particular interest is the file of material pertaining to Anne Jane Crawford, her estate and her condition, defined as "acute melancholia".
