Notice biographique

In 1845, a t the age of 18, armed with a little formal training in surveying and engineering, Fleming emigrated to Canada from Kirkcaldy, Scotland. He completed his engineering education and in 1858, as chief engineer of the Northern Railway, he first proposed a railway to the Pacific. Many years later, he played a leading part in its construction. Nationalist and imperialist of talent, vision and energy, he was responsible for a wide variety of projects central to Canada’s scientific, academic and cultural life. Fleming designed the "Three-Penny Beaver," Canada’s first adhesive postage stamp, in 1851. He also proposed the present system of standard time, by which the world is divided into 24 equal time zones. It was adopted in 1884. He was knighted in 1897 on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Sir Sandford Fleming, C.M.G., served as the second Chancellor of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario (1880-1915). Sir Sandford Fleming College, with campuses in many Ontario locations, was named in his honour.
He died at Halifax in 1915.

Historique de la conservation

The custodial history of this material is unknown. What can be ascertained however is that each item in this collection bears a stamp that says Sir Sandford Fleming. The album was found in a box of the Drummond papers (also held here at QUA) without being described or listed in the finding aid for that collection. The individual photographs were found in the Shortt Hayden collection which was an image collection created and compiled by the Library at the beginning of the 20th century at Queen's University. It has been proposed that the photographic album was originally compiled by Lily Smith (née Hall), who is Sir Sandford Fleming’s sister-in-law. The photographs addressing “Lily” points to either Fleming’s daughter or sister-in-law, but it was the photograph addressed to “A. Smith” that suggests Lily Smith, who married an Alexander Smith. As well, the set of portraits of the Higginson children (7R-2, 8V-3, 8V-4, 8R-1, 8R-2) makes more sense in the possession of their aunt rather than their cousin. There are a few items in the Sir Sandford Fleming fonds which bear a stamp, but those are marked "From the Library of Sir Sandford Fleming" so whether there is any corelation is unknown.

Portée et contenu

The collection consists of one leather bound photographic album and 16 albumen prints. The album features portrait photographs from the Peterborogh area predominantly. Individuals who can be identified are from the Higginson, Hall and Fleming families. Also includes portraits done by Topley, Notman, and Brown, Barnes and Bell of England. The sixteen albumen prints are linked in that they appear to be scenics gathered or taken by the survey photographer during Fleming's time with the Geological Survey of Canada and his trip across Canada.
