Sir Francis Moore. Lawyer and politician. He entered St. John's College, Oxford in 1574 where he received an MA as under-steward to the University in 1612. Moore gained admittance to the Middle Temple in 1580, and was called to bar in 1587. In 1589, Moore was elected to Parliament for Boroughbridge in Yorkshire and was appointed to the bench of Middle Temple in 1603. In 1614, he was made a sergeant and, three years later, became a knight. Moore died in 1621 and was buried in Great Fawley, Berkshire.
Bestandsgeschichte
The custodial history of this manuscript is incomplete but we know that it was owned and held in the private library of Sir. Geoffrey Palmer, son-in-law to Moore. Palmer saw it published in 1663. The inscription in the front of the manuscript says it was given to Sir John Finch (Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and Lord Keeper) by a Mr. Garton, Barrister of the Temple, in 1635. In the Athenae Oxonienses published in 1815 ( Vol. ii, p. 305) under the heading for Moore it notes that his manuscript is now in the hands of an Arthur E. of Anglesey. Reported in the Canadian Law Journal of February 1874 (article is pasted into the front cover of the book), the manuscript is noted as being now in Canada in the library of R. A. Harrison of Toronto. There is an annotation to the article implying that ownership transferred again in 1920 to Newton MacTavish. A small description card that accompanies the book states that it was given to the Faculty of Law at Queen's University by L. R. MacTavish (Legislative Counsel for the Province of Ontario). It was transferred to the Archives in 2001.
