Biographical history

Ralfe Johnson Clench (1936-1993) came from Hamilton to Kingston and Queen's University as a student in the 1950's. After his graduation, Arts '58, MSc. '60, he stayed on as an employee of the university where he lectured on Calculus, part time, to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Despite the fact that it was meant only for full time teachers, his students doggedly nominated Ralfe for the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching, from the time of its inception until his retirement. The rest of his work at Queen's was devoted to the Registrar's Office. In that capacity he became Chief Examination Proctor, Convocation Marshall and timetabler for both exams and classes. He retired from Queen's in the early 1980's due to ill health.

Over the years Mr. Clench developed a number of outside interests. He was passionate about street cars and at the time that he was collecting these photographs he seems to have developed an interest in ferry boats.

Custodial history

The Ralfe Clench collection (ca. 1936-1967) was donated to Queen's University on March 8, 1994 by members of the Kingston Division of the Canadian Railroad Association who were given the material to dispose of by his family. The material came from Mr. Clench's home and his collection of materials of interest to the Railroad Association were taken by that organization. These photographs are what is left of the collection.

Scope and content

The collection consists of photographs of Kingston, particularly Sydenham Ward and Queen's University, several local ferry boats, Queen's radio station CFRC, some travel photos from Ontario and Quebec, and a few pictures of steam locomotives. This collection seems to reflect the interests of Mr. Clench in the 1950's and the early 1960's. In particular it shows his interest in Kingston and its surroundings during Ralfe's student days at Queen's.
