Biographical history

John Baxter Black, a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, was born 8 June 1919 in Kingston, Ontario. While studying at Queen's University, he enlisted with the QUC COTC Artillery Arm on 8 May 1942. During the Second World War, he served in the theatres of Northwest Europe and the Central Mediterranean, and was decorated with the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-45. He received an honourable discharge on 28 March 1946.

Custodial history

This material was held by Lt. Black's sister, Jean Black, who arranged, transcribed and partially digitized the material.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of correspondence from Lt. Black to his family throughout the Second World War, as well as photographs of his COTC class. The letters document Black's entire military career through officer and combat training, through battles and into his return to civilian life. Transcriptions for all of his letters are available within the files. The fonds also includes some of his training manuals.
