Biographical history
James Laughlin Hughes (1846-1935) was born near Bowmanville, Ontario. He began teaching at the age of 18 and was appointed head master at the provincial model school at Toronto in 1871. Hughes was later appointed as the special commissioner to investigate fraud in teachers' examinations by the Ontario government. He was also instrumental in introducing the kindergarten system to the city of Toronto, and also inducted the phonic method of teaching reading and intellectual development. He was also an author who wrote many educational publications and books on educational and teaching methods.
