Notice biographique

Stella Joyce Musson Putnam, an author and art collector, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and raised near Melita, Manitoba. She attended the University of Manitoba, majoring in mathematics and French. In 1942, she married Munroe Putnam. Together, they moved to Grenville, Quebec in 1957, where they befriended A.Y. Jackson. He, along with other Group of Seven artists, would visit the Putnam cottage near the Rouge River to paint and sketch. Joyce Putnam passed away on April 24, 2023.

Historique de la conservation

The Joyce and Munroe Putnam fonds was donated to the Queen's University Archives by Joyce Putnam in December 1995. The material had been gathered over the years by Munroe Putnam in particular, as both he and his wife developed increasingly close friendships with various members of the Group of Seven and their circle of other Canadian artists. The material was transferred to the Archives in good condition. For the most part the records were well ordered. In those series where no discernible arrangement was evident, one was imposed by the archivist. Some items were found to be either duplicate in nature or of no archival value. These were either returned to the donor; transferred to another agency (in the case of those exhibition programmes and catalogues that were of a peripheral nature, and catalogues relating to those art auctions attended by the Putnam's where no purchase was made); or were disposed of by recycling. Several acrruals have since followed.

Jackson detailing the early years of the Group of Seven, and interviews with Joyce Putnam by CBC Radio's 'Ontario Morning' and local Kingston television (COGECO) programme, 'Senior Scope'; material relating to the publishing of Joyce Putnam's manuscript, "Seven Years with the Group of Seven"; files relating to the theft of a number of Group of Seven paintings from the Putnam's personal collection; scrapbook of her one-woman art show; a copy of her personal reminiscences entitled, "75 Cents a Week".
