Biographical history
Ira Allen Breck was an agent and chief clerk for Calvin &Cook of Garden Island up until 1855 when he became a principal partner in the island firm and the name changed to Calvin and Breck. It was during Breck's tenure with the company that saw thegreatest increase in business and revenue. Ira Breck was involved with the firm until his retirement in 1880. While in Kingston Breck resided at Sunnyside on Union Street. Ira Breck is believed to have passed away in Toronto, in December of 1910.
Custodial history
This sous-fonds forms part of the Kirkpatrick-Nickle legal collection. The documents came from the law firm of Nickle and Nickle, which was founded by Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1828, and which continued under various names (Kirkpatrick Nickle) and with various partners until 1968. The Breck estate papers were deposited, along with the papers of other clients of the firm, in Queen's University Archives during the 1960's.
Scope and content
The sous-fonds consists of records pertaining to the estate of Ira Breck and includes correspondence, business papers, financial records, land documents, insurance policies and material relating to bankruptcies and the settling of the estate. Of partucular interest are records pertaining to two schooners owned by Breck, the "Jessie H. Breck" and the "Oliver Mowat".
