Parker Family fonds

Fonds predominantly consists of records that document the business history of the Parker family over the 70 year period that they were actively involved in the life of the town of Stirling. The fonds includes some of the records of Parker's Mill and Tavern as well as the source documents involved in the civil cases that were the responsibility of Francis Borland Parker as the Clerk of the County and Justice of the Peace. There is also material having to do with various family and individual estates that were handled by the Parkers in their capacities as community members of good standing. Also included is material specifically dealing with the accounts of the School Board for Stirling as F. B. Parker served as the Board's treasurer for in 1895. The material has been divided into two series: Estate information and Correspondence and receipts. There is also an additional accrual of material from Mabel and Emily Parker, including student notebooks and diploma from Mabel's time at Queen's and cookbooks from Emily; testimonials and certificates relating to Mabel Parker having completed courses and examinations at both the Provincial School of Pedagogy and Queen's University at Kingston; and the "Marriage Certificate" of Mabel Parker and Arthur E. Ross.

The fonds consists of family photographs, records and memorabilia, which reflect the activity of the family, particularly George Comer, in local businesses and associations such as the Canadian Navigation Company, the Masonic fraternal organization, Customs House and the Home Circle, an early school association. There are also a number of scrapbooks that not only reflect the activity of the family, but also account for events that occured in the local community. Of particular interest is the wide variety of photographs which illustrate the practices of a number of local photographic studios such as Marrison, Sheldon & Davis, Henderson, Snider and Richardson. There are also photographs which reflect certain family members interest in amateur photography. Included are images of Division street, City Park, and Richardson Pavillion.

The fonds consists of correspondence, drafts of published works, articles, addresses, pamphlets and notes relating to the history of Kingston, transcripts of addresses and broadcasts of Leonard W. Brockington, 1936-1965, and offprints and news clippings relating to Canadian publishing. Correspondence relates to the Bibliographical Society of Canada, Bliss Carman and Canadian literature. Correspondents include Nathan Cohen, E.J. Pratt, Lady Tweedsmuir and C.B. Sissons. Includes research notes on Bliss Carman. The Gundy papers contain a great deal of valuable information concerning Canadian publishing, Canadian literacy developments and Canadian libraries over a period of almost forty years.

The fonds consists of both incoming and outgoing family correspondence predominantly between the Hurst sisters, Deirdre, Phyllis and Muriel (Murra), and their mother, Edith a Beckett Hurst. The letters detail both the personal and professional lives of these women early in their lives, focussing on the period before the sisters were married. The material provides rare insight into an artistic and cultural milieu as seen and experienced by independent women in the 1930's. The fonds also contains a number of photographs of Phyllis and Deirdre in particular, as well as a number of subject files pertaining to the Chekov Studio and Dartington School.

The fonds consists of files relating to the Airport Inquiry Commission appointed by the federal government in 1970 to inquire into the transportation needs of the Central Ontario market. In addition to evidence at public hearings, the Papers contain many of the studies prepared for the Commission as well as other exhibits filed with the Commission. The fonds also contains a copy of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations concerning commercial practices of the Canadian Dairy Commission.

The Geddes Snow Road Station fonds contains a series of yearly diaries, kept by Mr. Geddes from 1907 until 1966, that detail his life and the activities in and around the village of Snow Road Station, Frontenac County, Ontario. Towards the last years of his life, Hilda Geddes, his daughter, helped him keep his diaries; for this reason, the diaries actually record his death and events for a little time after his death. While the diaries form the bulk of these records there is also a series of business records that detail some of Mr. Geddes business activities at Snow Road Station. These include account books, a 'letter book' from the station and other business records.
