Notice biographique
Henry J. Morgan was a historian, a civil servant, an archivist and a writer. Morgan was appointed to undertake the arrangement and classification of the records of all State records not specifically transferred to other departments. In 1873 Morgan was one of the first government workers to ever be employed as an archivist in Canada. In addition to his work his personal interest in history led to his collecting documents or copies of documents from various families and individuals which dealt with his research area. Along with co-author Lawrence Johnston Burpee he wrote "Canadian Life in Town and Country" published in 1905, and "Types of Canadian Women" (extracts), 1903, by H.J. Morgan
Historique de la conservation
This collection of material was included in the purchase of a different fonds - the Tett family fonds. This material appeared to have no connection to the fonds and had it's own arrangement scheme therefore it was severed to form the H. J. Morgan collection.
Portée et contenu
This collection includes a small amount of material directly pertaining to Morgan himself, such as his appointment as archivist, as well as correspondence relating to his work as an historian and archivist. The majority of the documents are those recieved by Morgan in his active documentation of the history of certain regions in Ontario. The majority of the material is from the Morris family documenting the settlement of the Perth area, with additional material about the Radenhurst family and Justice John Wilson of the Superior Court of Upper Canada.
