Biographische Angaben
Harry Rex Wilson was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1920. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1943 and 1948, and then went on to earn a Ph. D. in English Linguistics at Michigan University in 1958. From 1949 to 1958 Dr. Wilson was on faculty at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. He then taught at Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario, and later became a Professor at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, where he remained until his retirement. Dr. Wilson was extremely active in the American Linguistic Society and the American Dialect Society. He was one of the main organizers and original creators of the International Conferences on Methods in Dialectology. These conferences were seminal events for developing new methods and information about linguistic studies. Dr. Wilson died in 1990.

Eingrenzung und Inhalt
The fonds consists of correspondence, subject files, sound tapes, linguistic maps, publications and teaching files related to linguistics especially in the Canadian Maritimes. The documents create a picture of Wilson's personal interests and the direction of the profession as a whole. The field notes and detailed information on dialect surveys, particularly in the Maritimes, and information about professional associations, are revealing about the development of linguistics in North America.
