Historia biográfica
Dr. James Edmund Mabee was born in 1851 near Beamsville, Ontario (Lincoln County). At the age of six he and his family moved to Odessa, Ontario, his home for the next eighty-three years. Mabee attended Sydenham High School and later Toronto Normal School. He entered Queen's University in 1884, and three years later he obtained his M.D. and C.M. degrees. After graduation he purchased a practice in Odessa where he remained until his death on August 20, 1940. He was Medical Health Officer for Ernestown Township for sixty-three years, thought to be a record for Canada. His long service as an active practitioner brought him many honours including a gold cane from the Frontenac Medical Society. Mabee was involved in the work of the Red Cross during World War I and was for a time Commanding Officer of the 47th Regiment.
Mabee married twice and his son, Dr. Horace Carleton Mabee (1891-1970) also became a physician.
Historial de custodia
Shirley Paul donated the three certificates and diplomas to the Kingston General Hospital Museum on May 8, 1992. The same donor added the seven booklets and larger day book as well as various loose material on November 13, 1992. All this Mabee material was later transferred to the Kingston General Hospital Archives and subsequently deaccessioned and transferred to the holdings of Queen's University Archives in 2010. The two letterbooks from the 47th Militia Regiment of Odessa are of unknown provenance.
Alcance y contenido
The fonds consists of the medical and military records of Dr. James Edmund Mabee ranging in date from 1878 to 1922. Dr. Mabee was a Queen's University graduate who practiced as a general physician at Odessa, Ontario, for over sixty years. There are seven notebooks: one relates to his time at Queen's University, four are notebooks primarily concerning prescriptions, and two are notebooks of remedies and prescriptions pertaining to the 47th Regiment. There is also one patient account book (day book), 1887-1888, covering his medical practice and a file of textual materials including a prescription, correspondence, and newspaper clippings and Dr. Mabee's medical diplomas (New Jersey, Queen's University and Ontario). A later accrual of two letterbooks from Mabee's time as the Officer Commanding (O.C.) the 47th Militia Regiment of Odessa complete the fonds. The letterbooks address the daily business of the regiment such as ordering supplies, issuing pay, and responding to requests from the Eastern Ontario Command.
