Donald Swainson was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1938. Dr. Swainson received his B.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1960, his M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1961, and his Ph.D, also from the University of Toronto, in 1968. He began his teaching career at Queen's University as a Lecturer in the Department of History in 1963, becoming an assistant professor in 1965. He achieved the rank of full professor in 1979. He served on dozens of committees at Queen's University, and wrote numerous academic and journalistic articles. He frequently reviewed historical publications and was the author of a number of his own books including John A. MacDonald:The Man and The Politician (1971). He also co-authored Kingston:Building on the Past with Professor Brian Osborne. Dr. Swainson died in 1998 after a lengthy illness.

Fonds consists of correspondence, subject files, published and unpublished material, clippings, course notes, speeches, and an audio recording of Dr. Swainson's lectures. The material represents his academic work and other scholarly interests, particularly his specialized knowledge on Canadian Confederation history with an emphasis on the life and times of Sir John A. Macdonald, John Diefenbaker, James Richardson of Kingston, the Garson Family of Winnipeg; and Garden Island.
