Biographical history

Daniel George MacMartin (also McMartin), was born 9 Janaury 1844, in Perth, Ontario. Daniel George W. MacMartin, a mining engineer, was the Government of Ontario's representative on the federal government's Treaty Commission, appointed to negotiate with the Ojibway, Cree and other Indigenous peoples in Northern Ontario, in particular, the James Bay area. This negotiation concluded in the creation of Treaty No. 9, the James Bay Treaty. Daniel George MacMartin died on 12 April 1923, and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Ontario.

Custodial history

The diary was originally given to Wallace Havelock Robb, of Abbey Dawn, by a relative of Daniel MacMartin's. This item was donated to Queen's University Library in 1968 by Wallace Havelock Robb. It was subsequently transferred to Locator #2999, and in 2014, to its present location.

Scope and content

Collection consists of the personal diary of MacMartin describing his trip to Northern Ontario to conclude negotiations of Treaty No. 9 - The James Bay Treaty with Ojibway (Anishinaabe), Cree (including the Omushkegowuk) and other Indigenous Nations (Algonquin); plus various transcriptions and ancillary material.
