Notice biographique

Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge live and work in Toronto, Ontario. They were located in NewYork from 1969-1976 where their earlier work was grounded in the conceptual art movement of the late 1960s and took the artistic form of sculpture. By the late '70s their art began to focus on social issues which were explored through a process that allowed their subjects to become participants in the work. Condé and Beveridge have defined their photo-based art practice around the facilitation of dialogue among diverse communities and networks, exploring the concept of dialogue as a form of socially engaged art practice.
Their work attempts to bridge two audiences: working people and those in the arts. Condé and Beveridge are considered pioneers in the development of the staged fictional format of documentary photography. They have collaborated with various trade unions and community organizations in the production of their staged photographic work over the past 30 years. Their practice has developed over the the years and extended past this form as they developed a process of visual workshops in which community members collaborate in developing the form of the work and act in the final images.
Their work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally in both the trade union movement and art galleries and museums. They are active in several labour arts initiatives including the Mayworks Festival in Toronto and the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre in Hamilton, Ontario.

Portée et contenu

The fonds is comprised of textual and digital records reflecting the artistic practice and community activism of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge over a 40 year period. The textual and photographic material spans from the 1970's until 2010, and encompasses the artists participation in the Toronto community predominantly, but also the art and activist community of New York City in the 1960's and 70s. The records reflect both the practice of the artists through individual art projects and commissioned work, as well as their participation and activity with various groups, locals, unions, institutions, organizations, committees, or festivals such as Mayworks, The Ontario Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, The Canadian Labour Congress, the Independant Artists Union (IAU). The electronic records predominantly reflect their evolving artistic practice. The artists have digitized many of the components and products of their early works which are in evidence in the textual files. Earlier works, while represented in the electronic record, are merely an alternate format for the finished works and components and are not as detailed a record of the creative process of the artists as the more contemporary files created entirely through a digital process which the artists moved over to in 2000. The fonds is arranged in the following series: Artist groups and organizations; Correspondence; Art Jobs; Art Business; Banners; Sculpture; Art Projects; Studio documentation and Press morgue.

Material donated by Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge - 2012. Partial purchase made possible through the generous benefaction of the Chancellor Richardson Memorial Fund.

Classement

Some arrangement has been imposed on the records by the archivist. The material was fairly well ordered (in large chunks) by the donors with the Art Projects, Art Business, various organizations and groups, and Correspondence series being identified on the files by the creators. The records maintained that order in accruals that were moved out of their main office into supplementary storage.
