Biographical history

Alkis Klonaridis, art dealer, was born in Greece in 1943 and emigrated to Canada in 1962. He attended the University of Toronto where he met David Mirvish. In 1964 Klonardis went to work at the David Mirvish Gallery in Markham Village, Toronto. He became director of the gallery in 1975 and when the gallery closed in 1978, Klonardis opened his own gallery, Klonardis Inc., where he showed Canadian and American abstractionists. Ill health forced Mr. Klonardis to close his gallery in 1992 and he died in 1993.

Custodial history

The Alkis Klonaridis fonds was transferred from the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in December 1993. The Art Centre, which had received pictures from Klonaridis's collection, also received gallery files from executors Dan Solomon, Jane Corkin and David Mirvish. A division of the fonds was made whereby the coloured slides and transparencies pertaining to works Klonaridis had exhibited and/or sold were sent to the Queen's University Art Department Slide Library.

Scope and content

The fonds illustrates the business career of a Toronto-based art dealer and exhibitor who specialized in Canadian and American colour abstracts. The fonds consists of accounts, consignments and sales of Klonaridis, Inc. 1978-1991; lists of artists exhibited 1978-1991; advertising materials; personal correspondence 1975-1988.
