Bader, Alfred

Alfred Bader was born in Vienna, Austria in 1924. After Kristallnacht he was included in the first Kindertransport from Vienna to Britain in December 1938. In 1940 he was interned in a British detention centre until being transferred to another centre on Quebec's Ile aux Noix later that year; while there he studied for McGill University's matriculation exams, passing them in 1941. After World War II he studied chemistry and engineering at Queen,s University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945. Emigrating to the United States, he pursued graduate studies at Harvard, earning an M.Sc. in organic chemistry in 1948 and then a Ph.D. in 1949. During a sea voyage to Liverpool that year he met Isabel Overton.

After his studies Bader began work as a research chemist with PPG Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1950-1954, and then became chief chemist for Aldrich Chemicals Company (1954-55), and subsequently its president (1955–81) and chairman (1981–91). He served as president of Sigma-Aldritch Corporation (1975-80) and its chairman (1980-91), then as chairman emeritus (1991-92). Alfred Bader became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1964. He has received honourary degrees from several universities in the United States, Canada and England. Alfred Bader died on December 23, 2018.

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) is the marketing and business development arm for the City of Kingston. Founded in 1997, the Corporation´s mission is to ensure that Kingston remains a world-class city by supporting economic growth and investment. KEDCO provides direct support to local companies requiring assistance in securing government funding, labour force support or government liaison. KEDCO works with site selectors in attracting new businesses with local real estate opportunities, including municipally owned industrial lands. KEDCO oversees The Entrepreneurship Centre, a provincially funded small business enterprise centre which provides resources, consultations and professional development for emerging and existing small businesses.

Davis, Dr. Sturton Mathwin

Dr. Sturton Mathwin "Sam" Davis, a Rear Admiral with the Royal Canadian Navy, Commandant of the National Defense College and Adjunct Professor at the Queen's University School of Public Administration, was born in Birkenhead, England on 18 April 1919. After graduating from the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, he served in the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors during the Second World War. He met his wife, Lois, on a troop ship in Halifax during the war (she had been serving with the American Red Cross), and they married in England. In 1948, they moved to Montreal.

At the outbreak of the Korean War, the Royal Canadian Navy recruited him, and he rose to become director general for ships. He later became Commandant of the National Defense College (at Fort Frontenac), a position he held until his retirement in 1974. That same year, he became Executive Director of the Queen's-Kingston Health Sciences Complex.

Through part-time studies at Queen's University, he had completed six Masters degrees in Engineering, Education and the Arts, as well as his doctorate, by 1979. He became an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Administration in 1985, introducing and coordinating the Health Policy Specialization component of that program. He served on numerous committees throughout his career, including the KFL&A Health Board, the Health Services Restructuring Commission and various committees within Kingston General Hospital.

Dr. Davis passed away on 28 October 1998.
