Biographical history
William Robert Sanders of Deer Park, Charleville, County Cork, Ireland came to Canada and was articled as clerk to Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1832. Kirkpatrick had been a former neighbour and family friend in Ireland. Sanders remained in Kingston until 1842, investing in several properties in Kingston , and in the steamboat, William IV. When Sanders returned to Ireland, he appointed James Burrowes, another clerk in Kirkpatrick's firm, to mangage his property in Canada. Sanders died in Ireland in August of 1850. He left no immediate family.
Custodial history
This sous-fonds forms part of the Kirkpatrick-Nickle legal collection. The documents came from the law firm of Nickle and Nickle, which was founded by Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1828, and which continued under various names (Kirkpatrick Nickle) and with various partners until 1968. The Sanders estate papers were deposited, along with the papers of other clients of the firm, in Queen's University Archives during the 1960's.
Scope and content
The sous-fonds consists of correspondence and account books. The correspondence is arranged chronologically, and due to the fact that the Kirkpatrick and Sanders families were friends, is both personal and of a legal nature. The correspondence covers comment and opinion on such topics as the Crimean War, the American Civil War and the social and economic situation in rural Ireland. Also included are three account books of William's that were sent to the Kirkpatricks to help explain the estate transactions.
