Scope and content
Series contains files on approximately fifteen major subjects and a number of minor ones. The files on agriculture cover the period from 1843 to 1969 and include material on exhibitions dating back to the earliest date. A number of files on the Children's Aid Society (dealing with administrative matters only) relate to the years 1870 to 1969. The county property files include correspondence and committee reports from 1850 to 1965. Extensive records on the court house and jail date from 1850 to 1965. Extensive records on the court house and jail date from 1850 to 1965. Among these records is a file relating to the new court house constructed in 1856. Another section relates to health and welfare and homes for the aged. Another section contains petitions. The subjects of the petitions range from a broken toll gate (1852) to the construction of a teacher's college (1852), a Wolfe Island Ferry (1852), and roads, bridges, toll roads and booths (1844 to 1965). This invaluable collection of petitions illustrates many of the problems of rural life and is of great importance for the social historian. Other files relate to pipeline construction, railways, census statistics (including one for Portsmouth Village in 1858), and weed control. In addition there are files on many aspects of the First and Second World War (including great production of food, returning soldiers, gasoline rations, meat rations, and the Memorial Committee).
