Biographical history
William Newlands was born in 1853. His career as an architect began in Kingston sometime in 1883. John C. Newlands joined his father as a draughtsman in 1908-09, and by 1910-11 the two had formed a partnership known as William Newlands and Son. William Newlands died in 1926.

Elevations and plans of brick house with terracotta and pressed metal ornament, the suppliers of which are named. J.C. Strange continued to reside at 34 Barrie Street (3 doors north of O'Kill) throughout the period. In ' 95, the city directory notes that a house at the corner of Wellington & Union is unfinished, but there is no indication that Strange moved into it (directories checked through 1898).
