Joseph Brant a Mohawk military and political leader, based in present-day New York and, later, Brantford, in what is today Ontario, who was closely associated with Great Britain during and after the American Revolution.
Custodial history
Acquired through auction so provenance is not entirely known.
Scope and content
Letter concerns the imprisonment by Congress of a Mohawk chief, Captain Aaron Hill, a delegate to the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, which was finalized on October 22, 1784. Brant learned of Hill's imprisonment and wrote letters to Governor George Clinton, Peter Schuyler, and Mathew Visscher to intercede for Hill.
Accompanied by a copy of The American Historical Record, Vol. 2, No. 19. July 1873 where the letter was first published, as well as a transcription and two file cards describing the letter.
