History

Richard Arthur Preston was born in 1910 in Middlesbrough, England. Educated at the University of Leeds (B.A 1931, M.A 1932) and Yale University (PhD 1936). He was assistant professor at University of Toronto in 1945, Professor of History at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston (1948-1965), and Professor of History at Duke University (1965-1980), including the position of director of Duke University's Canadian Studies Program (1973-1979). Richard Preston was a prolific writer of articles and books. This includes "Kingston Before the War of 1812", and "Canada's RMC: A History of the Royal Military College."
