Administrative history

Mitchell and Wilson, Limited, contractors and lumber suppliers, was founded just prior to 1840 by George Mitchell, an immigrant from Edinburgh, Scotland, in Gananoque, Ontario. The business was originally located on King Street East in Ganonoque, and was then moved to a property near the dam on the Ganonoque River in 1853. George Mitchell managed the business until his death in 1888, after which time his son, David A. Mitchell, purchased the business from his mother and assumed management. At the same time, David Mitchell took a partner, David Wilson, and the business was renamed Mitchell & Wilson, Contractors and Builders Supplies. After Mr. Wilson died in an accident in 1911, Mitchell purchased his partner's share, but retained the company name. The business was also moved around this time to the corner of Market and St. Lawrence Streets. David Mitchell remained as manager until 1922, when the company was incorporated and the name was changed to Mitchell & Wilson Limited. In 1923, Ross M. Richardson, grandson of George Mitchell and nephew of David Mitchell, took over as manager of the business, having been employed with the business since 1910.
