Metcalfe (1785-1846) was born in Calcutta, the son of Bengal army major. From 1796-1800, Metcalfe was at Eton. He then returned to India and joined the Civil Service. He became the provisional Governor-General in 1833, and received the Order of Bath in 1836., In 1822 he had succeeded as baronet on the death of his elder brother. From 1839-42 he was Governor of Jamaica and in Jan.1843, he was appointed Governor General of Canada. In Jan.1845, he was created Baron Metcalfe for his services.
