Biographical history
French general and first president of the Fifth Republic. Fought in the First World War, form which he emerged as an enthusiastic advocate of the air-armour combination on which Germany was to found its blitzdrieg of 1940. With the fall of France in June 1940 de Gaulle fled to England to lead the "Free French" cause.
