History

The Rev. Robert McDowall (1768-1841) was the first Presbyterian Clergyman in the Kingston area, arriving in 1798. He was born at Balston Spa, New York in 1768 to Scottish parents and was educated at Williams College, Mass. In 1798, the Dutch Reformed classis of Albany, a branch of the Calvinist Church, sent missionaries to Canada. McDowall decided to stay to serve Upper Canada. He situated himself at Fredericksburgh and Adolphustown. He married Hannah Washburn, a daughter of Ebenezer Washburn. They had a large family.
