General note
John Lambton (1792-1840) was a Whig MP for Durham from 1813. He was made Lord Privy Seal in 1830 and assisted in carrying the Reform Bill in 1832. He was created 1st Earl of Durham in the following year. In 1838 he was appointed Governor-General of British North America and the next year made his famous 'Report on the Affairs of British North America' which ultimately led to the granting of responsible government to the colonies.
