The fonds consists of the following three series: correspondence and collateral material, (1902-1939); speeches and speech material (1914-1937); and, personal and philanthropic material. The material reflects the many activities and roles that Joseph Flavelle undertook in his life. Not only reflecting his business activity, this material also documents his involvement and direction in many religious, education and philanthropic institutions and events.

The fonds consists of seven bound volumes of the records of the First Division Court of Frontenac County predominantly documenting civil cases of low value. the majority of the cases seem to be business related - in a sense, a small claims court.

Copies of correspondence, lists of discharges, transfers and casualties of Royal Engineers working on the Rideau Canal, 1830-1837, and information relating to the military hospital at Newboro during the construction of the Rideau Canal. The papers also contain certificates, receipts and examinations of the Medical Council of Canada, Canadian Medical Association Code of Ethics (1922).

Includes manuscript in ink written on both sides of three pieces of birchbark concerning religious questions and gospel meeting held at Sharbot Lake, Ont., a letterbook for the period 1868-1873, relating to the finances of Grant's church in Halifax (volume 1); correspondence relating to the biography of Principal Grant by his son, W.L. Grant, 1902-1904 (volume 13). Letters from Grant to several well-known figures including Andrew Drummond, C.J. Low, Charles Mair, Sandford Fleming, Alexander Morris, Alfred E. Lavell, William Snodgrass and James Williamson.
