Abitibi Canyon

This film relates the process of constructing the dam at Abitibi Canyon. The viewer is shown scenic shots of the Abitibi River, waterfalls and portages through unspoiled forest while a voice-over praises the grandeur of Canadian natural resources which have only recently begun to be put to good use. A map of northern Ontario shows the exact location of the Abitibi River and proposed dam. The viewer is then shown images of the early stages of construction: a construction town; the river whose power is to be harnessed; and, land surveyors examining the terrain. The project's progress is illustrated by animation, live action shots and the narrator. The viewer is shown workers drilling rock, the installation of railway tracks and equipment, the river being diverted, blasting and rock removal. The narrator expresses admiration for the scale of the task and its careful organization. The rock is taken to a crusher where it is prepared for concrete; enormous piles of sand are needed for the same purpose. The concrete is shown being mixed, transported and finally dumped into place. At noon, the workers are shown marching to lunch, and then dining. The narrator describes the care that has been taken to look out for the welfare of the workers by providing good food, a hospital, recreation, and a school for their children. After lunch, the work resumes on the spillway and training wall. A group of engineers discuss the progress. Finally, the dam is completed and the viewer is shown the first trickle of water going down the spillway, as the engineers and executives look on. Soon, the water is shown surging through, and the transformed landscape is shown by aerial photography. Lord Bessborough, the Governor General, and Lady Bessborough visit the dam and tour the spillway and power generators. As the narrator describes the significance of the new source of power, his comments are illustrated by shots of mills, mines, factories, and kitchens. The viewer is shown permanent houses which have replaced the construction town, and a monument to 'Sons of Martha,' workers who 'sacrificed their lives to the project.' The film ends with shots of the still river illuminated by the moon.

Produced by Texasgulf Inc., in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines, the kit is comprised of instructions, scripts, audio recordings, and attendant filmstrips entitled, "The Earth People" (1972), "Son of Wildcat ... The Story of the 'Oil Game'" (1974), and the latter's sequel "Major: Miner ... about Mineral Science and Technology" (1975).

The fonds consists of ship registration records compiled in various ports of registry throughout Canada, including first registers, registers of subsequent transactions and mortgage registers. The papers constitute the richest collection of documents tracing the history of the Jews in Canada from 1760 to 1850. During this period in which Sephardic Jews were dominant, the Hart family allied itself to most of the Jewish families in Canada and the United States. Office of the Governor General of Canada fonds

Fonds consists of records created and/or maintained by the Office of the Governor General of Canada and by the colonial predecessors of that office. As regards the pre-Confederation period, some general comments about the relationships among the various levels of administration are useful at this point in order to provide a context for understanding the scope and type of records created. The Governor or Lieutenant Governor of each colony in British North America may be seen to have maintained three levels of communication, which are reflected in the structure of the record-keeping systems in their offices. Great consistency is evident in the segregation of despatches prepared in the Governor's name (first and second level) from letters prepared at his orders but signed by his Secretaries (third level). At the first level were despatches exchanged with the Colonial Office. More detailed comments on the nature of this relationship and the records it created are found elsewhere within this fonds in the descriptive entry for the Correspondence with the Colonial Office series. At the second level were despatches exchanged with fellow governors and senior officials who might be categorized as colleagues. Although practice varied in detail from one colony to another and over time, despatches exchanged between the Governor-in-Chief and Lieutenant Governors, with the Commander of the Forces, the British Minister at Washington and with certain senior government officers were traditionally filed or recorded together. The resulting series of despatches received, drafts of outgoing despatches and entry books of despatches received or sent may not at first glance appear as so coherent a mass, particularly as not all the records have survived. The text of any one despatch may be found in multiple locations: as received by the addressee, as recorded (in an entry book) by the signatory for future reference, or as a duplicate/copy sent to a third party for reference. Thus, while no one series can be said to be complete, the texts of all documents relevant to a specific question can generally be tracked down in at least one location. At the third level were letters addressed to and received from subordinates. Responsibility for preparing and signing correspondence at this level was delegated to the Private, Civil or Military Secretaries. More detailed comments on the nature of this relationship and the records created are found elsewhere within this fonds in the descriptive entries for those series which contain records created and maintained by the Civil and Military Secretaries.
