The papers constitute the richest collection of documents tracing the history of the Jews in Canada from 1760 to 1850. During this period in which Sephardic Jews were dominant, the Hart family allied itself to most of the Jewish families in Canada and the United States. The fonds consists of material created and kept by Harry Tanner. Much of the material that still exists was originally that of Dorothy Todd Tanner, that remained in Harry's possession when she passed away. The fonds has been divided into two series, material seemingly created and or accumulated by Harry Tanner about his life and work, and a second series of material that was maintained by Dorothy Tanner from, or about, Harry that then came to be in Harry's possession after her death.
