Biographical history
Eric W. Thrift was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 23 August 1912. He attended the University of Manitoba where he studied Architecture. He received his B.Arch (Gold Medal) in 1935. In 1936 and 1937, he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his M.Arch in 1938. From the early years of his working career Mr. Thrift became more and more a Planner rather than an Architect. Between 1934 and 1944 he worked for the Manitoba government's post-war reconstruction committee and then he became director for the Metropolitan plan for Greater Winnipeg, 1945-60. Between 1960 and 1970, he served as the General Manager of the National Capital Region. He then moved to Queen's University at Kingston where he served as both a teacher and head of campus planning. In 1981 he became Professor Emeritus at Queen's. He passed away in Kingston in 1995.

Arrangement
By the time it reached Queen's Archives, the material was in no particular order. Some of the papers remained in their original order but this order did not bear any particular relevance to the way the rest of the collection was arranged. With this in mind it was decided to undertake a reorganization of the papers so that they would become more accessible to users. The fonds has been divided into eight series that reflect the broad outline of the collection. Most series have been arranged chronologically and then alphabetically. Most of the files retain their original headings but there are a few that did not have file names and the titles for these were based on content. These latter files are indicated with square brackets around their file name. Files are numbered consecutively in each box. In a couple of instances series were divided into separate parts by the addition of a word to the file name. For example, Queen's, Campus Planning-file name and Queen's, Teaching-file name.
