History
David M. Hayne was a professor of French-Canadian literature and Canadian comparative literature at the University of Toronto. Born in Claremont, Ontario on 12 August 1921, he would obtain his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1942, his M.A. from the University of Ottawa in 1944 and his Ph.D. in 1945. He was employed at University College starting in 1945 and retired in 1985.
Hayne was the founder and director of Cahiers de la Société bibliographique du Canada (1961-1972); Director -General of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (1965-1969); Associate Director of University of Toronto Quarterly (1965-1976); President of the Bibliographic Society of Canada (1978-1980); and Director of Publications for the Royal Society of Canada (1996-2000). He was the recipient of a Centennial Medal in 1967, a Silver Jubilee medal in 1977, and a Gold Jubilee medal in 2002. He was made a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1970, obtained an honourary doctorate from the University of Ottawa in 1985, and made a meber of the Order of Canada in 2000.
