Lt.-Col. John By (1781-1836) was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and commissioned in the JRoyal Engineers in 1799. He was stationed in Canada 1802-11 and in 1826was sent out to take charge of the construction of the Rideau Canal, to link Kingston and the Ottawa River. The village of Bytown (which later became Ottawa) was named after him. The canal was completed in 1832 when By returned to England.
