Administrative history

The British American Hotel was built at the corner of Clarence and Wellington in 1807 by the Walker brothers. First named Walker House, the hotel changed names a number of times based on the proprietor. It has gone by the name of Daley's Hotel and Kent Hotel but it was officially named the British American Hotel in 1836. It was the most prestigious hotel in Kingston for over a century. This building was the longest continuously running hotel in Canada when it burned down in 1963.

Custodial history

The ledgers in this collection came from Kingston Frontenac Public Library, while the textual material was donated by the legal firm of Cunningham Swan.

Scope and content

Collection consists of four guest registers (1851-1869) for the Kent and British American Hotels, located in Kingston, Ontario. The registers contain the signatures of a variety of visitors to Kingston including visiting artists, performers and politicians. The proprietors also make note in the pages the times and frequencies of steamboat traffic likely in order to aid their guests in planning their transportation needs. The collection also includes legal documents, donated at a later date, concerning the ownership of the building lots (67 and 88) and a number of financial interests in the hotel.
