In 1852 William acquired ownership of the 100 acre family farm near Glenvale in Kingston Township, from his parents Thomas and Elizabeth Breden. The Bredens are listed as residing both at this home in the country, and in the city at their residence on Princess Street, to which further properties were added, fronting on to Victoria Street in 1876 and 1880. William's first wife , Margaret, died c. 1880 and William remarried Amelia Wiley. William and his first wife had two daughters, Margaret and Sarah. After 1880 William is referred to solely as a farmer. He died at age 88 on November 5, 1893.

Custodial history

This sous-fonds forms part of the Kirkpatrick-Nickle legal collection. The documents came from the law firm of Nickle and Nickle, which was founded by Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1828, and which continued under various names (Kirkpatrick Nickle) and with various partners until 1968. The Breden estate papers were deposited, along with the papers of other clients of the firm, in Queen's University Archives during the 1960's.

Scope and content

This sous-fonds is a modest record of a the typical pioneer success story, following the fortunes of a son of an illiterate Irish immigrant to some financial success and civic respect in Kingston's early years. Although not documenting William's many careers as butcher, alderman, contractor or family man, the financial papers reflect his affairs in connection with his properties, his debtors, his stocks, his estate and the estate of his second wife, Amelia.
