History
Arthur W. Beall was born in 1860 at Columbus, Ontario and received his early education at Port Perry and Whitby. In 1879 he attended Ottawa Normal School, and after teachin for three years came to Queen's University. He graduated in 1888, and four years later was awarded an M.A. From 1888 to 1893 Mr. Beall was a missionary in Japan, and for some time was professor of modern languages at the Imperial University, Tokyo. Upon his return to Canada he became interested in children's work, lecturing for ten years under the auspices of W.C.T.U.. His work attracted the attention of the Honourable Dr. A.R. Pyne, then Minister of Education, who placed him on the permanent staff of the department in 1911. He died at Listowel in 1939.
