Custodial history

The Alan Caswell Collier Fonds was donated to Queen's University Archives (QUA) by his widow in November 1992. The material was boxed and removed from his studio by QUA staff. Upon its receipt by the Archives, the material was transferred into acid-free folders and boxes. The material from the second accession in 1993 was boxed by Mrs. Collier and transferred to the Archives by Pacific Art Services.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of correspondence, financial records, diaries, travel diaries, calendars, sketch books, sketches and drawings, programmes and invitations pertaining to shows and exhibitions, inventories, speeches, awards, miscellaneous and printed material, photographs, slides and sound recordings covering all aspects of his life as a student, teacher, traveller, world-renowned artist and chronicler of the country he loved. There is also a small amount of material created and maintained by Ruth Collier (nee Brown) and some family genealogy files.

Arrangement

The Alan Caswell Collier Fonds has been arranged according to a loosely defined order, for the most part by format, originally established by the artist, and subsequently modified by both himself and Ruth Collier. Files have been numbered consecutively, by the processor, from front to back, within each box. Those items that were loose, or in envelopes, binders, or the like, have been placed in file folders, and have been given a file title based on the contents of the file or the original container. All other titles have been transcribed from the original file title, unless missing, in which case a title was supplied by the processor, based on the contents of the file. The majority of the slides taken by Alan Collier during his annual sketching trips have been maintained in their original boxes. These boxes are designed to hold slides and are larger than the normal acid-free containers. A conscious decision was made to retain the slides in these boxes and affix numbers, based on their sequence in the fonds, to them. Smaller boxes, which contain slides, and any loose slides have been placed in an acid-free box and labelled accordingly. Some items that were found to be either duplicated or of no archival value have been removed from the fonds and have been returned to the Estate, or have been disposed of by recycling.
