Kingston Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer 2 Spirited + Archive

  • CA QUA11086
  • Conceptual entity
  • 1970-2010

In 2011 Janice McAlpine and Renée van Weringh proposed that they work with Queen's University Archives to establish and develop an archival collection pertaining to the Kingston Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer 2 Spirited community. Documentation of gay and lesbian life has been scant. Lesbians and gay men have often destroyed or concealed records of same-sex relationships, and when they have not, family and society at large have frequently stepped in posthumously to expunge the evidence. The resulting dearth of information about queer lives has made growing up and coming out difficult for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, two-spirited, and queer) contingent of each generation.
This is not a recent problem or a local one, but it is one with local implications: although some large centres have lesbian and gay archives, such as Toronto’s Lesbian and Gay Archives, the regional record of gay and lesbian life in Canada is almost nonexistent.

Queen's University. The Commerce Man

  • CA QUA11431
  • Organisation
  • 1946-1974

Established in the spring of 1946, The Commerce Man was originally published by the Commerce Club in order to meet the demands and changes within University by returning World War II veterans. The main purpose of the periodical was to present the students of the School of Business with their own magazine based upon the contributions of undergraduates, recent alumni and faculty. The periodical also offered valuable training for student producers, advertisers and writers. The periodical was published semi-annually in the fall and spring of each academic year, until the Fall 1954 issue where it became an annual publication. The content of the magazine shifted greatly through its two decades of publication, but usually the periodical offered business-related articles, book reviews and articles on recent research within the program. Notably in the 1950s and early 1960s, the periodical published detailed descriptions of recent graduates and positions they held within industry. Throughout the Commerce Man’s publication it faced financial difficulty and by 1965 the periodical was reduced to a once yearly publication though each issue was significantly longer. The periodical was restructured again, when in 1969 the Commerce Society broke away from the Faculty of Arts and Science becoming the newly founded Queen’s Commerce Society in the Business School. Due to a mixture of financial strain and loss of interest within the newly founded Commerce Society the Commerce Man ended publication in 1974. The publication of the Commerce Man offers a inside look into Commerce Society at Queen's, and Canada's changing post war business models.

The publication ran for 16 issues and ended on November 5 1991 after numerous changes in editorship.

Queen's University. INQ: Independent News of Queen's

  • CA QUA11444
  • Organisation
  • 1993

INQ: Independent News of Queen's was published weekly between January to May 1993 with a circulation 11,000 issues across Kingston and area. INQ was a newspaper that attempted to approach both local and international news through unbiased perspective or without political affiliation. Part of this governing idea was to be funded independently from Queen's University student activity fees and other government institutions. INQ was published by a separate incorporated business that was run by the editors and the business. This allowed them to maintain control over ownership of the newspaper. During its 14 week run, INQ covered a wide range of topics from international news, sporting events and entertainment. Though publishing consistently, by end of May 1993, INQ faced financial difficulty and ended due to its continued refusal to integrate with Alma Mater Society.
