This collection was brought together by the University Publications of America (UPA) to provide reference material for the study of the history of the Southern United States. The strategy guiding the collecting mandate is the geographic and physical location of the records. All the material in Series A has been selected from the holdings of the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina.
Emma Wetmore Bliss was born in 1836 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 1857 she married George Goodridge Roberts. She died in 1923 at Ottawa.
John Reade was a poet, writer and journalist born in Ballyshannon, Donegal, Ireland in 1837. Educated in Belfast, he arrived in Canada in 1856, and established the "Montreal Literary Magazine." He was connected with the Montreal "Gazette" as a literary editor in 1874 and contributed to every magazine or review that has been established in Canada since 1860. In 1887, he was elected resident of the Montreal society for historical studies, and was one of the original members of the Royal Society of Canada.
