The Quaker Oats Company in Canada was founded in June 1902 with the establishment of a mill in Peterborough, Ontario. Another mill was purchased in 1912 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On August 13, 1943, the Canadian mills were incorporated as the Quaker Oats Company of Canada, Ltd. with main offices in Peterborough. It was then operated as a autonomously managed subsidiary of the Quaker Oats Company of Chicago, Illinois. In 2001, the company was acquired by PepsiCo, Inc. and is operated as the Quaker Division of PepsiCo Canada ULC.

Munroe Putnam, forester and amateur art collector, served in the RCAF during the Second World War. He was stationed in Winnipeg when he met and married his wife, Joyce Musson, in 1942. They moved to Grenville, Quebec in 1957, where they met A.Y. Jackson.

Stella Joyce Musson Putnam, an author and art collector, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and raised near Melita, Manitoba. She attended the University of Manitoba, majoring in mathematics and French. In 1942, she married Munroe Putnam. Together, they moved to Grenville, Quebec in 1957, where they befriended A.Y. Jackson. He, along with other Group of Seven artists, would visit the Putnam cottage near the Rouge River to paint and sketch. Joyce Putnam passed away on April 24, 2023.
