Colin Alexander Campbell was born at Sheddon, Ontario, on January 17, 1901. After attending Queen's University he became a mining engineer and worked in, and managed, a number of mines from 1921 to 1934. From 1934 to 1937 and, later, from 1946 to about 1970 he was engaged in consulting practice. In 1939 Campbell enlisted as Second Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Engineers, attaining the final rank of Brigadier-General in 1968. His wartime service brought him four awards - Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1943, Mentioned in Despatches (M.I.D.) in 1944, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1945, and the Legion of Merit, U.S.A. in 1945.

Brigadier-General Campbell was also active politically and in 1934 was elected to the House of Commons for the riding of Frontenac-Addington where he served until 1937 when he resigned his seat in the House of Commons to contest the riding of Addington in the Ontario general election. He was defeated but later in the year was elected by acclamation in the Sault Ste. Marie by-election. He was then appointed Minister of Public Works, a position he held until 1941. He was defeated in the riding of Sault Ste. Marie in 1943. Following the war, Brigadeer Campbell remained active in Liberal Party work, concentrating on fund-raising for both the federal and provincial Liberal Perties. He died in 1978.

Born on October 29, 1921 in Perth, Ontario, Emma Campbell was the daughter of James and Jenny Acheson, and sister of Annie (Acheson) Fournier. Emma Campbell graduated as a registered nurse in 1943 from the Brockville General Hospital and spent much of her career as an operating room nurse. She passed away July 28, 2011.

Campbell, Grace MacLennan Grant

Author Grace Campbell was born near Williamstown, Glengarry County, Ontario in 1895, on the farm which is the setting of her debut novel, Thorn-Apple Tree. She was educated at local schools, entering Queen's University with the MacLennan Glengarry scholarship from Williamstown High School. On her graduation in 1915 she obtained the gold medal in English Literature. She married the Reverend Harvey Campbell and together they had three sons, two of whom were killed in 1944 while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Many of her short stories have been published in Canada, the United States and Great Britain, a few having been translated in the Danish. Her novels focused on the Canadian experience during different points in the country's history. In addition to Thorn-Apple Tree (1942) she is also the author of a number of books including The Higher Hill (1944), Fresh Wind Blowing (1947) and The Tower and The Town (1950). She was a active member of the Canadian Authors Association and the Arts and Letters division of the Council of Women, as well as the Provincial Girls' Work Board, the University Women's Club, and the Women's Canadian Club. She served on the Queen's University Board of Trustees from 1947-1963. Mrs. Campbell died on May 31, 1963 at Niagara-on-the-Lake.
