Graham, William Roger

William Roger Graham was born 19 March 1919, in Montreal. He earned a B.A. in 1941 from Union College (now the University of Winnipeg), an M.A. (1944) and a Ph.D. (1950) in History from the University of Toronto. He began his academic teaching career in 1943 at the University of Toronto and, in 1968, came to Queen's University's Depertment of History, by way of the University of Saskatchewan. While in Saskatchewan he completed his three volume biography of the former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister, Arthur Meighen. In 1973, he was named as the next holder of the Douglas Chair of Canadian and Colonial History. In 1984, he retired from the University, as Professor Emeritus, and remained actively engaged in historical research until his sudden death on 17 November 1988.

Grand Opera House Company of Kingston Limited

In 1876, after a disasterous fire destroyed many Princess Street buildings in Kingston, Martin's Opera House came into existence in the course of reconstruction. Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria attended the opening in 1879. Twenty years later, in 1899, Martin's Opera House, itself, was gutted in a fire and in its place the Grand Opera House was built and incorporated. Its object was to add to the cultural development of the community by providing a venue for theatrical attractions touring Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. It continued to operate for twenty years until liquidation in 1919.

The Grand Theatre Guild was established in Kingston in 1966. Its objectives are to promote the greatest possible use of the Grand Theatre and to sponsor performances in the theatre; to raise money to improve the theatre and to add to the facilities of the theatre; to encourage the people of Kingston and district to join in the programmes making use of the Grand Theatre; and to co-operate with the Grand Theatre Board of Directors in developing policies for the theatre.

John Webster Grant was a United Church clergyman, editor, and academic. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, the son of William P. Grant and Margaret Dorothy Waddell. He married Gwendolyn Margaret Irwin in 1944. He was the editor of Ryerson Press from 1960-1963.
